History
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official from the U.S. department of health, education and welfare, proposed to then President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a "Nurse Day" but failed to adopt.
In January 1974, decided to celebrate the day on 12 May this be the birthday of Florence Nightingale, considered the creator of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the kit of the International Day of Nursing. The kit contains materials of public and educational information for use by nurses everywhere.
As Florence Nightingale is seen as an example of decent behavior in some parts of the world have sent petitions to UNISON, to transfer this day to another date.It has been suggested to move it to May 21, date of birth Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845). Elizabeth Fry founded the Institution of nursing sisters and is also known for his work with prisoners.
Since 1998, the May 8 was designated as the Day of Nursing Education, intended to celebrate annually. Although, as in 2003, the Day of Nursing Education was held in Wednesday, and within the week of May 12, since that was celebrated the week of nursing (May 6-12) each year.
Celebrations in the United Kingdom
Every year on May 12, marks the day in Westminster Abbey in London. During this day, a symbolic lamp is carried from the Chapel of Nursing in the same Abbey and carried by several nurses, up to the abbot, who stands at the altar.
This gesture is the symbolism of the transfer of knowledge from one nurse to another. In the church of Santa Margarita in East Wellow in Hampshire, where Florence Nightingale was born, performed a religious service on Sunday after his birthday.
