Robinia

The black locust (Robinia) is a genus of plants in the legume family (Fabaceae), subfamily Fabaceae (Faboideae). The genus includes about 20 species. In Europe, we often find the black locust, which was introduced from North America.

Name origins

The name goes back to the black locust Frenchman Jean Robin, who introduced the black locust 1601 in Europe.

Appearance

Locust trees are deciduous trees or shrubs, coming from North America or Mexico. They have alternated, odd pinnate leaves, which are part leaves opposite and entire margins.

The stipules are often trained as thorns. The striking flowers hang in clusters. The seeds are sitting on several flat in a legume.
