Rapunzel (genus)

Rapunzel (Phyteuma) is a genus of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). The genus has about forty species. They occur naturally in Europe and western Asia.

They are herbaceous plants that vary in height from 5-90 cm. The leaves are alternately arranged. On a single plant leaves vary in size and shape, the lower leaves are larger and wider than the upper, long and narrow. The leaf margin is serrated.

The flowers are in dense panicles. Each flower has a narrow, deep vijflobbige corolla 1-2 cm or longer. Most flowers are purple, but blue, black, pink and white are also possible. The fruit is a capsule containing many small seeds.
