Description
This evergreen tree is about five to twenty meters high. The crown is rounded, the thick branches are often not fork. The leathery, entire and undivided leaves are 20-40 inches long and ten to 20 wide.
They are arranged spirally on the branches and sit quirlartig piled on the branches. The young leaves are reddish tinge with red veins. Older leaves turn yellow or red spots between the leaf veins.
The terminal flower spikes appear and are long and 15 inches, standing upright or horizontally from the side. The fragrant flowers are enclosed in the spherical bud of the conjoined sepals, breaking up into two or three irregular sections when the flower unfolds. The sepals remain preserved long, they can still be seen on the ripe fruit.
The four white, oblong petals, five to seven centimeters long, are distinctive, but the numerous long and ten centimeters stamens. They are also white, pink towards the tip, the anthers are yellow. The stamens are fused at the base into six groups. The stylus is longer and protrudes from the stamens. The flowers open only for a night and are pollinated by moths and bats.
The resulting seeded fruit is shaped like a pyramid on a square floor plan, with the sepals are sitting on top of the pyramid. They are colored when ripe from green to brown. The pericarp has a sponge-shaped, so that the fruits float in water.
They remain viable even after several months stay in salt water, so that the tree has a wide distribution along the coasts of East Africa to Pacific Ocean. The seedlings will appear in the "pyramid", the hard skin of the fruit is still available at the foot of the trunk for a while.
