The Slofhak Plant

The slofhak (Anthoxanthum Grand tatum) is an annual plant, which belongs to the grass family (Poaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as common, but significantly decreased. The plant is native to Eurasia. The slofhak in contrast to just smell grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum) a sharp, not so pleasant smell.

The strong tillering plant is 4-40 cm high. The stems are bent rising strongly branched at the base. The leaves are 0.8 to 6 cm long and 1-5 mm wide. The lower leaf sheaths are the scabbard mouth after bare. The 3 mm long tongue (ligule) is pointed.

The slofhak blooms from May to July. Inflorescence an oblong, more or less losbloemige, 1 to 4 cm long aarpluim. A-desk consists of two sterile florets topped a fertile flower. The bottom, 6 mm long kelkkafje-desk is bare and the second, 8 mm long kelkkafje usually has a pointed top spine. The second pair kelkkafjes has long awns, without the awns 3 mm long and is covered with hair. The husk is very small, about 1.5 mm long. The pale yellow anthers are 2.5 to 3.5 mm long. The pistil has two stamps.

The fruit is a fruit crop.

The plant occurs on dry, acidic sandy soil between the grain and along roadsides.
