It's genus is named in honor of German botanist Johann Jacob Dillenius, and consists of trees and shrubs perennial or biennial. The leaves are simple and spirally arranged.
The flowers are solitary or in terminal clusters, with five sepals and five petals, numerous stamens and a group of 5-20 carpels. They are superficially similar in appearance to the flowers of Magnolia.
