The Meadow Oat

Meadow oat (Helictotrichon pratense syn. Avena pratense) is a perennial plant of the grass family (Gramineae or Poaceae) and is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare, but stable to slightly increasing. The plant is native to central Europe.

The dense sod forming plant is 30-80 centimeters high with the bottom one-to two-knopige slender, upright stems. The smooth, folded, gray-blue blade has a rough edge and is much lighter in color than the bottom. The leaf sheaths are hairless very rough. The pointed, triangular ligule (ligule) is 1.5 mm long.

Meadow Oat flowers from May to August. Inflorescence a panicle, the lower panicle branches all stand together or two. To 28 mm long, the spikelets have three to six flowers per flower Awn one on the bottom, about 13 mm long husk. The top husk is about 11 mm long. The axis of the short-desk has its edges, to 2 mm long hairs, and the stem is slightly thickened under-desk. Both kelkkafje have three veins. The top kelkkafje is about 15 mm long and the lower about 12 mm long. The helmet violet boxes are about 5 mm long.

The fruit is a fruit crop.

The plant is found in dry grassland, grassy slopes and verges on Limburg Cretaceous.
